Environmental Charter (ENGLISH VERSION) a été créé par magdalena
Together with the Registration Form we will ask you to sign the following Environmental Charter
By registering on the guided trek of the Great Crossing of the Lofoten Islands, you agree to respect the different points of this charter. In case of non-compliance with one or more of these points, a participant may be excluded from the trip at any time during the course, without being able to claim back any refund of the services not consumed.
But, these common sense rules are rather easy to follow ☺
As a general rule, there should be no trace of our passage. The points below are in line with the Norwegian law that regulates activities in nature ("Friluftsloven"). To learn more about this law, you can find more info here:
www.rando-lofoten.net/en/travel-to-the-l...for-outdoor-pursuits
A - Waste management:
No waste of any nature whatsoever (plastic, metal, paper, glass, etc.) can be left along the route or in the bivouac spots. They should all be packed in your bag and brought to a trash container that will be fairly regular on the course.
-> Food rests: only small amounts of peelings (with the exception of banana peel, citrus fruits or other fruits or vegetables that degrade poorly) may eventually be buried along the way. Everything else must be repacked and placed in a suitable bin.
B – To satisfy the natural needs:
Here are the rules to follow:
1. Should it be for a pee or for a more serious need: stay away from passing areas (especially private property)
Stay at least 50 meters away from water, rivers, streams, marked and unmarked trails, bivouac sites or picnic areas.
2. Make a hole of 15 cm deep (a small shovel is a good idea) and relock the hole.
3. We do not recommend the use of wet cleaning wipes (woven paper containing plastic) and they should never be buried or left along the path, as this does not degrade.
If the toilet paper cannot be buried, then it must be carried along.
We ask you to use toilet paper with moderation.
For the girls: do not leave tampons or sanitary napkins behind you.
C- Wash and cleaning:
Whether for cleaning dishes or for washing yourself, it will be necessary to use products that are not too harmful for the environment (soap, shampoo and dishwashing liquid should be biodegradable). Ex: hard Aleppo soap or Marseille soap are suitable for clothes and also for washing. You can also find all-purpose liquid soap made especially for trekking. Ditto for toothpaste, there are natural products available.
It will be necessary to limit the quantity of soap in the lakes or streams so do not use large quantities. Warning: some lakes serve as drinking water reservoir and it is forbidden to wash or bathe there
The other rules:
D - it is forbidden to make fire on the course. It is therefore necessary to bring a gas or alcohol stove to prepare your food.
E - it is not allowed to pick up protected plants (if in doubt, ask your guide), it is allowed in Norway to feed on berries, everywhere (except in gardens or cultivated areas).
F - fish only in the authorized places (those where you don’t need a license). Fish only what you can consume and respect the minimum sizes (ask the guide if in doubt)
G - hunting is prohibited in any form whatsoever
H - follow the guide and do not walk off trail when there is one. The soil in the Lofoten is very fragile (peat) and it is necessary to avoid at all costs to widen or to dig new paths
I - respect the inhabitants on the course and their properties (houses, huts, farmlands…)
This will be downloadable as a PDF document that you can sign and send back to us
