When you get to the little port of Stamsund, where the Hurtigruten line ships call, it’s difficult to believe that a fantastic hike starts only a few hundred metres away! The route, which requires a good head for heights in certain places, takes us from peak to peak on a trail that follows a very jagged mountain ridge. Throughout this hike high up in the mountains, which requires a certain degree of skill, the unobstructed outlook means you have great panoramic views over Vestfjord and the entire large island of Vestvågøya.
The trail begins in a residential area at the bottom of a little pass between the Kattberget and Mannfalet peaks. Cross a wooded area and then climb to the pass where you take the right-hand trail across the ridges to 308m. The trail goes back down through a pass towards a handful of solitary birch trees and climbs back over the ridges to the Steinetinden peak (509m). Be careful at the peak (cairn) because a trail appears to go back down on the other side (north-west). Don’t take it because it leads to an unclimbable cliff! From the peak you have to turn back thirty metres or so and then take the small trail that goes back down into the valley above Steine, then climbs back to Ramntinden peak (498m). From there follow the ridges to the plateau of Søreheia. The trail goes back down to the left of the ski slope to Svarholt then towards Stamsund.
